THE STORY OF THE
SAINTS - BY FATHER ED

Mother Teresa of Calcutta (1910-1997). Mother Teresa was born Agnes Gonxha Bojaxhiu in Skopje, Albania on August 26, 1910. In 1928, she entered the convent of the Sisters of Loreto in Ireland and made her novitiate in Darjeeling, India. From 1929-1948, she taught geography at St. Mary's High School in Calcuta. Having witnessed the plight of hundreds of poor and neglected people in the streets of that city, she felt inspired by God to do something about them. She asked, and received, permission from the Church to serve them by founding a new order of nuns. She took Indian citizenship and began recruiting like-minded women to serve "the poorest of the poor". In 1950, the group was recognized by the Church as the Congregation of the Missionary Sisters of Charity. In 1966, a group of men was also founded and was called the Missionaries of Charity Brothers. Homes, hospitals, schools for the poor and hospices spread throughout the world. One little nun, filled with God's Spirit, deeply committed to Jesus Christ and to the poorest of God's children, made a tremendous impact on the whole world. In 1979, she was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. She was called home to God on September 5, 1997, whispering the name of Jesus. Her work continues in the men and women who are following her example.
